1. Begin with someone you trust: When you are new at communicating what is and isn’t okay-begin with someone you trust. Ask a good friend, partner or spouse if you can practice with them.
  2. Say “no” to things that are easy: Start by saying “no” to things that are particularly easy: For instance, if your daughter doesn’t care if you are her Girl Scout Troop Leader and you get no joy out of it, begin there.
  3. Fail a lot: You aren’t going to wake up one day and be a boundary expert. Seriously, practice. Fail. Then, practice again. This will not happen overnight.
